Happy Halloween 2011!

During past Halloweens I have been everything from Marilyn Monroe to Princess Jasmine.  I have a running costume list on my cell phone and update it whenever I think of cool new ideas.  This year, I decided to get crafty and make my costume.  I gave some hints in a post back in September about my costume, and I have tried to keep it a secret (which has been hard since I worked really hard on it and was super excited about it).  I decided to be...

Below are some pictures of my creation as well as instructions on how I made it if you plan on being any type of round object (sports ball, disco ball, planet, etc) in the future.  I threw in some fun shots of my weekend as well.  I went to Fado Irish Pub with some of my friends and ended up coming in 3rd in the costume contest!  Hulk Hogan came in 2nd place and Alice in Wonderland came in 1st.  I'll try to find photos from the contest and post soon.  How did you spend your Halloween weekend?  Did you dress up?  Let me know in the comments below!

To make my costume, I took a 3-4 foot beach ball ($11 on Amazon) and paper mache-ed it.  To paper mache, you just need newspaper, flour and water.  I found tons of different recipes for the mixture online from 2:1 to 3:1 parts water to flour, but just mix until it has a nice liquidy paste mixture.  I will admit sometimes my mixture was thick and sometimes it was super runny, but both ways worked.

After doing at least five layers, let it dry.  I bought $3 spray paint cans at The Home Depot.  It takes a can per layer, unfortunately.  I did one layer with white paint to hide the newspaper and one layer of ivory paint to give it a nice dirty volleyball color.

Spray paint dries quickly.  Next, I took a mix of red and black paint (to make a blood color) and sponged it on with a crinkled up paper towel so it would look like a hand print.  I think this strategy turned out better than if I had used a brush.  The effect looks great!

Then, I added the finishing touches - the nose dot and the volleyball lines (to make tan paint, mix yellow, white and a tiny bit of black).  The volleyball lines are not perfect whatsoever.  I actually think I left out the whole sides, but it looks good enough for me.  Sorry, volleyball players.

The finished product!

The full couples costume effect!

Out and about!

Group shot before heading out!  We didn't leave until midnight because we were having too much fun playing Dance Central on the Kinect.

Do you love my fall office decor?  The pumpkin was only $3 at The Home Depot and the flowers were free from the manager at Chick-fil-a.  It made my day!

I decided I did want to carve my pumpkin.  I drew an A on it, carved it, painted it pink and added the tiara as a special touch.  And waala, a princess pumpkin!
