If you follow my blog on Facebook then you know I was excited to see Snow White and the Huntsman. It stars Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth. Plus, it is based on a fairy tale, so you know I'm there! My family was in town this weekend, so we hit up Studio Movie Grill to see it (always a good time!). This isn't really a review exactly, but below are my main thoughts from Snow White and the Huntsman:

1. Charlize rocked it. She looked gorgeous, gross, old, evil, innocent, and more all wrapped up in one movie. I wouldn't be surprised if she got some kind of award recognition for this role, but I guess the year is still young...

2. Hidden Hottie - Sam Claflin plays William, Snow White's childhood friend that later tries to rescue Snow from the evil queen. I don't know why they were hiding him in the movie advertisements?! I thought he did a good job of holding his own against mega-hottie, Chris Hemsworth.
3. Lacking in the Romance Dept. - While everyone knows the story of Snow White (although this one is a bit different), this movie was seriously lacking in some romance for this self-proclaimed hopeless romantic. I was expecting a lot more from a movie that's key moment involves "love's true kiss". But, I must add that when there were lovey-dovey scenes, the writers did a great job at spicing up this classic fairy tale!

4. Chris Hemsworth - I'm just going to go ahead and admit that I think Chris Hemsworth is hotter as the Huntsman than as Thor. You can throw stones and never read my blog again, but it is true - minus his character being constantly drunk and dirty. Huntsman throwing his ax around is way cooler than Thor throwing his magical hammer, lets be honest. I also think he looks a lot like his brother Liam in this movie (Hottest Family Award?!). Sidenote: Speaking of Liam, did anyone see him on Punk'd with girlfriend Miley Cyrus? Boy has anger issues, Hulk-style! Lastly, ever since seeing Avengers, Chris' voice has constantly bothered me as I couldn't figure out who he reminded me of. Then during Snow White and the Huntsman it hit me - Heath Ledger (they are both Australian so it makes sense). In this movie especially, Chris reminded me of Heath Ledger in A Knight's Tale. Anyone agree? Beuller, Beuller?
5. And the Oscar for Best Makeup and Visual Affects goes to... - The visuals were fantastic! It was like Disney meets Game of Thrones. Charlize's makeup and costumes were spectacular. The "fairy forrest" (which I am assuming was all digitally created) was really beautiful as well. They really did a great job of creating a new world that is still realistic a la the Harry Potter films. I'm glad Disney didn't re-create this movie so they could make it a bit darker - it has a PG13 rating by the way.
6. Once Upon a Time - Many people might not remember the huntsman at all from the 1937 Disney cartoon, but he's there. I actually think the ABC hit, Once Upon a Time, has given the most details of the Snow White/Huntsman storyline before this movie was released. I think the story is pretty interesting especially the way this movie's writers decided to portray it in the film. Does anyone agree that has seen the movie? I liked that aspect. And as for Once Upon a Time, I love that show! Since it is doing well, I hope it sparks more fairy tale movies.
7. Make them your own. - The cool thing about fairy tales is that you can change them however you wish really. There are fairytales in all cultures and languages. They actually began as oral stories passed on through generations - this is why they originally changed. For example, Cinderella's glass slipper was originally made of fur (and thats not including the similar ancient stories).
8. What to say about KStew? - I really don't like or dislike Kristen Stewart. I actually like all the movies she has been in from Panic Room to Twilight, her real life romance with co-star, RPatz, and that she always changes out of heels into sneakers after the red carpet at events. But, I must say she looks a little grungy in real life and it was no different with this movie. She looks like she literally walked off the street with her unwashed hair and dirty clothes in every scene. It bothered me for some reason. Maybe because she is supposed to be a princess? Who knows. The only time I thought she looked nice and pretty was when she was dead to be honest. I guess thats just what the director wanted...
Those are all my movie notes for this flick. I'll be sure to keep you posted on any other movies I see. I would love to see Rock of Ages, Brave and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter this month. Let me know what movies you plan to see this month in the comments below!
PS. Speaking of movie theaters - they are one of the 15 technologies a child born today will never experience. It is understandable because they are so expensive and have such inexpensive competition, but it still makes me sad to know future children will never experience them. While expensive, I think they are still magical.

I was trying to figure out who Chris sounded like too - and you are right! Heath Ledger! Too funny. Your review is almost identical to mine. I love Once Upon A Time as well - and feel as though this movie falls into the same line. And, I must admit, not a huge fan of Kristen Stewart in it. Oh well - still a good movie! :)

DeleteGood review Alexandra. A lot darker and grittier than most fairy tales we see on the big screen, but it worked and gave this film a new edge to it that I think it needed. Story could have had more tension to it though.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Most fairy tales are actually pretty dark. Disney just makes them seem the opposite. I agree it was missing something else - maybe we will see it in the second movie.
DeleteI just saw this movie today, so it's funny that I stumbled across this! I thought Charlize totally rocked the role, too. She was incredible.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sad to think about living in a world without movie theaters. I hope that prediction doesn't come true, because I agree with you, they are magical. I must make more of an effort to go to the movies. It'll just make me feel better if I know I'm doing my part to keep movie theaters going!

I agree! Thankfully there are a bunch of great movies coming out soon that I would pay the $ to see in theaters.
