What's In A Name?

Photo from here.

About a week ago, the local radio show, The Bert Show, held a new round of their "Celebrity Incarceration Draft".  Basically, each time a celebrity is arrested, each person on the show picks a new celebrity to add to their roster in hopes a celeb from their roster will get arrested and they will win the Celebrity Incarceration Draft pot of money.  Anyway, they did a new round the other morning because Scout Willis - Demi and Bruce's middle child was arrested in NYC for drinking.  I took to Twitter in outrage that they would count Scout as a celebrity and I ended up getting a shout out - by full name - from the show.  Claim to fame! Check it out below by clicking the sound bite from "Round 6 - Scout Willis":

You might have heard in the clip that Jenn says "he" and references me as a boy!  Ugh, the horror and the curse of having a guy nickname.  Might I add that my Twitter handle is @lil_ms_lovely by the way.  I'm not sure how one gets confused?!  I decided today's post would be all about a little name clarification...

My full first name is Alexandra - it means "protector of man" - it is quite the name to live up to! :o)  When I was teeny-tiny, my parents decided on the nickname Alec.  Supposedly, they saw it in a movie or something - and the character was a girl by the way.  I wish it would gain a little popularity so people stop telling me I have a "boy name" like we are all still in middle school.

In college, people started calling me Alexandra as a "nickname" even though it is my real name.  In  grad school I worked as a server and the guys in the kitchen called me "Alejandra".  I like those names.  Plus, there is no confusion about if I am a boy or a girl!

Sometimes I really like the name Alec...until someone makes a rude comment about it.  I want more unusual names for my future kids, but I will think twice before giving them a name that is too out there.  Unless your kids can use the comeback "Well, my mom is Gwyneth Paltrow and my dad sings for Coldplay" when another kid makes fun of their name, please don't name your child anything that will haunt them the rest of their life.

Other than a quick vent sesh, I also just wanted to clear up any confusion you might have since I sign e-mails and things as Alec, but my blog is "Adventures with Alexandra".  I hope this helps!

Do you have an unusual name or a common name?  Do you like it?  Let me know in the comments below!

  1. My name is common. My husband's name is common - heck his is always popular (Chris). When we had our daughter, we tried to avoid the "top 10" names. And I like more unusual names, he doesn't. We compromised on Riley. BUT, I don't like that spelling. To me that spelling - Riley - makes me thing BOY! And then he showed me a new spelling. Ryleigh. I LOVED it. It looked feminine to me. If he hadn't found that spelling our daughter would be a Natalie, which I don't feel would fit her personality very well. Ryleigh was perfect - even though half the world can't pronounce it right. She often gets Raleigh. I hope she embraces her name, and will show the world she is capable of owning that unisex name :)

    1. Aww, Ryleigh is such a cute name! I'm not sure how people could mess it up, but it happens. I think that's the perfect balance between different and normal.
