Restaurant Review: Bobby Flay's Bar Americain

A few weeks ago I ventured into the city to see all the holiday magic and to have dinner at Bar AmericainBar Americain is owned by Food Network celeb chef Bobby Flay.  (He owns a twin restaurant at the CT casino - Mohegan Sun.)  The restaurant looks very beautiful and open.  My only complaint regarding the set-up of the restaurant is that the bar is in the middle making it crowded and awkward to get drinks.  Fortunately, we didn't have to wait long even on a Friday night (We had reservations for later, but they were able to seat us before then because we were hungry!).

For an appetizer, we enjoyed the Shrimp-Tomatillo.  It was pretty good, but then again it's fairly difficult to mess up shrimp cocktail.  I was more impressed with the complimentary bread basket.  It had some delicious corn bread in it (or maybe I just can't resist some good Southern food up North?!).  For dinner, I decided on the filet mignon with a side order of asparagus.  My date had been to the Bar Americain restaurant at Mohegan Sun before and highly recommended the steak.  He specifically said the steak with the restaurant's sauce was not just great but "awesome".  I had to try it!

I'll have to admit that the filet mignon itself was nothing special, but the steak topped with Bobby Flay Steak Sauce was amazing.  I have no idea what is in this special sauce (The ingredients aren't mentioned on the menu or the website.), but it is available for purchase online.  I was also a fan of the asparagus.  The side dishes at Bar Americain are definitely big enough for two people to share.  We had plenty asparagus left over.  We were both so full that we completely skipped the dessert menu although they had some tasty options to choose from.

Overall, I feel as though I need to try more items before giving a definite review of Bar Americain and it's menu.  From my first visit alone, I would have to say that it wasn't too special especially for a restaurant in New York City.  While I am absolutely in love with the steak sauce, I can purchase it online for $10 and grill my own steaks.  Is that too harsh?  Maybe I just need to give it another shot and try different dishes.  For now though, it's sad but true.

I'm still taking restaurant recommendations in NYC, so let me know your favorite places in the comments below!

  1. Good review! I, too, would probably just buy the sauce and put it on things other than steak too!
